Core Technology

The Subaru Boxer Engine

Subaru firmly believes that the Horizontally-Opposed Engine is the optimum design for driving enjoyment. The pistons face away from each other in a 180º symmetrical layout around the crankshaft and work to balance out each other’s vibrations, delivering a smooth, shudder-free feel. This is because the engine can rotate freely at any given speed, delivering heart-gripping response to the driver. The length and height of this engine layout can be kept shorter than a traditional in-line engine, and it is also lighter.

The Symmetrical AWD

Symmetrical AWD, comprising of a longitudinally mounted Horizontally-Opposed SUBARU BOXER engine which achieves the low center of gravity and a symmetrically designed AWD drivetrain, is the system that Subaru has focused on for the best stability, safety and on-road performance at all times on all roads and in poor conditions.

Body & Chassis

The SUBARU Global Platform is a next-generation platform that has been developed using all of the know-how and technological expertise that SUBARU has acquired over the years. This new technology is the method to provide “a fun driving experience for all passengers regardless of the roads and weather conditions,” and it is also the solution that we have reached, through careful consideration of all the human senses and with our philosophy of car manufacturing, “focusing on the vehicle passengers.“

Safety

Considering safety from every angle

Subaru’s design philosophy of “Safety First” comes from the company’s roots in aircraft manufacturing, and we have been carrying out collision tests with consideration for pedestrian protection since the days of our first production vehicles (such as the Subaru 360 in the 1960s). Our “Primary Safety” concept considers safety from the primary stages of the vehicle’s design such as form and operation. Our “Active Safety” concept aims to improve collision avoidance on the road.

Primary Safety

Subaru is the predecessor of aircraft manufacturer, pursuing the “accident-free automobiles” to avoid the error in operation and judgement. Inheriting the philosophy of safety, Subaru focuses on the primary design such as surface and operation, thereby we pursue clear, useful and comfortable space where driver can concentrate on driving easily.

Active Safety

SUBARU has fine-tuned all the basic functions of a car – driving, turning and stopping – to develop cars that offer exceptional stability and predictable control. SUBARUs designed with such a high level of basic functionality are also designed to avoid dangerous situations with an outstanding reputation for safety.

Passive Safety

Since embarking on the business of car production, SUBARU has above all else focused on development of “safety technology” to provide protection against collisions. SUBARU cars incorporate numerous technologies designed to protect passengers, as well as the lives of pedestrians, in the event of a collision. Designing every aspect of the car with the aim of guaranteeing utmost safety is a collision safety concept that is unique to SUBARU and evidenced with features such as the “Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frames body” to protect against collisions, or the engine layout that protects passengers from shocks in the event of a crash.

Quality

SUBARU Manufacturing

Subaru’s people-first approach to car-making is supported by the people behind our manufacturing. Our engineers are proud of their unmatched skill and high level of teamwork, and they bring to each and every car they build an uncompromising focus on quality. All this is to ensure that as many customers as possible appreciate the value of a Subaru. This group of irreplaceable engineers is where Subaru’s car-making starts.

A legacy of skill

The top-notch engineers behind our manufacturing don’t just learn the latest skills and technology, they also hone their senses, sharpenin. their ability to sense even the smallest change in materials. This is how Subaru is able to produce the highest-quality products in any age.

Subaru technology, Subaru production

Our Symmetrical AWD system, built around a horizontally opposed engine, is just one example of the many unique technologies Subaru has developed. These demanding production technologies was first made possible by our high level of manufacturing skill, and manufacturing them ourselves is how we can make products no other company in the world can match.

Absolute quality

Having started out as an aircraft maker, Subaru takes pride in its dedication to quality and its unshakable confidence. Using a highly precise quality inspection system, we first establish that our parts are of the highest quality.

Design

DYNAMIC X SOLID

A solid, well-built foundation that says “peace of mind,” fused with a sense of dynamic action that says “enjoyment”. This is the embodiment of a new generation of vehicle, born out of Subaru’s relentless pursuit of the essential car.

Roots

Our design philosophy: Adapting to the continuously changing environment while standing firm in rooted values. Subaru was originally an aerospace manufacturer in an industry that demands the highest levels of safety, dynamic performance and efficiency in packaging. Intelligent, functional designs needed to achieve those requirements are the root of Subaru’s design philosophy.

Symbolic Face Design

It’s easy to spot a Subaru. Its dynamic, contoured exterior reveals what’s on the inside: the world’s only front-mounted horizontally opposed engine. A hexagonal grille, based on nature’s most stable shape, combined with the signature six-star design puts the Subaru design in a class of its own.
